Last week I was asked to photograph these twin little guys (Talon & Owen) in the NICU before Talon was transferred to Children’s Hospital. The twins arrived March 6th at 27 weeks and were just under 3 pounds each at birth. We had arranged to meet in plenty of time, but as it turned out, the transport team arrived (early!) shortly after I did so I continued documenting while they were there. My heart was breaking for them…..I didn’t adequately have the words to explain that I knew just exactly how they were feeling. And let’s face it, nobody wants to hear that at the time anyway!
We’ve been through it….the whole transport thing as well. Most know my youngest was in the NICU, but also when my now 5 year old was 2 weeks old we took her to the pediatrician because she suddenly had no interest in eating. Turns out she was very sick (after testing we found out she had pneumonia, RSV, AND influenza….how is that even possible with such a little body?) and actually stopped breathing in the doctor’s office. The transport team immediately came and picked her up…I will never.forget.that.moment.
As much as I wish it were true, life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. And as much as I’d like to think “everything happens for a reason”, sometimes I’m just not able to wrap my brain around why these things always seem to happen to the nicest people….or have to happen at all. When I was on my way out, I asked if they would allow me permission to share their story here on the blog….they agreed, because this is real life.
And to Talon & Owen’s family…I THANK YOU, for sharing your story. I’ve been thinking about you guys every single day. Sending many, many hugs and prayers to you all.
Please say a prayer for these little guys and their family.
